Seed selection for lawn renovation and overseeding

Renovation is more than choosing a seed name. For grounds teams and landscape contractors, a useful specification connects the existing turf, the reason it is thinning, site preparation and the intended use. WLS’s ryegrass blends and blue-rye mixes are catalog starting points for that discussion, not automatic recommendations.

Identify what the renovation needs to fix

Record the grass already present and whether the work involves patch repair, overseeding or broader renovation. Consider recurring traffic, shade, drainage and compaction. Those observations help distinguish a seed-selection question from a condition that needs attention before more seed is applied.

MU Extension’s cool-season lawn establishment guide emphasizes soil testing and appropriate soil preparation. It also explains that seed needs incorporation and contact with the soil: scattering seed over existing vegetation or a hard surface is not a complete establishment plan. Ask a local turf professional which preparation method is appropriate for the project.

Compare the catalog options against the specification

The WLS catalog has separate Ryegrass Blends and Blue-Rye Mixes categories. Blue-rye listings include Athletic Interseeder, Grass Unlimited, WLS Fairway and WLS Pro Turf. Their names help locate products; they do not establish that every listing suits a particular field, lawn or playing surface.

Review confirmed ingredients where the product page includes supplied blend-sheet information. For other listings, ask WLS for the current formula and seed tag. Confirm annual versus perennial ryegrass, the actual species and varieties, and whether the mix meets the project specification rather than selecting only by a familiar name.

Discuss timing and follow-through locally

MU Extension discusses establishment timing for Missouri cool-season lawns, but a single calendar date is not a prescription for every site. Tell WLS your project location and intended work window; check local conditions and your maintenance plan with a qualified adviser.

Bring the area, current turf, soil-test information, preparation plan and expected use when you call. Confirm availability and packaging before scheduling the job. No catalog description guarantees establishment speed or a successful stand without appropriate site preparation and care.
